Over the past many years now kratom has been growing in popularity. It is an organic product that is derived from the leaf of a tree that grows in Southeast Asia. The leaves are ground up into a powder and used in many forms.
It is used by people for chronic pain relief, elevate the mood, suppress depression, induce sleep for insomniacs and provide a safe environment for people who want to wean themselves off dangerous opioids. But this helpful nature of the plant has brought up concerns as well and there are some who believe that something that has medicinal properties should also be controlled.
Others though think that consumers should be allowed to make their own decisions regarding what they purchase and use. The federal government however is still studying the uses of the plant and its alleged side effects for some years now. And in the absence of any law at the federal level, it becomes the responsibility of the individual states to create their own regulations regarding whether to allow or to ban it.
Is Kratom Legal in Missouri?
Thankfully for the residents of Missouri, it is legal at present. They can at present enjoy all of kratom’s great benefits but there are laws being drawn as we speak and one should check the laws which might be already in place by the time this article is published.
What are the Kratom laws in Missouri?
Till date there were no legal items from the federal government and neither was there anything from the state’s side. Hence, kratom has been legal in this lacuna of law at present. But in the first half of 2019 a debate started in Missouri regarding whether to ban kratom or to regulate it.
According to some until 2019, no one in Missouri even knew how to spell kratom but then with the DEA reports and the FDA jumping on to the scene, people dying due to overdoses, salmonella infections related to kratom – it became the epicenter of all discussions.
This brought the counties in Missouri together to discuss a ban or regulate kratom with most on one or the other side of the battle lines. Some council people even went ahead and tried kratom for the first time after these debates and realised its benefits and switched sides to say that it should be regulated to remove the ‘bad players’. This and other such individual cases helped the various counties to make up their minds slowly to not ban but to regulate kratom.
And thus in January 2020, a new bill was introduced in the Senate called the Kratom Consumer Protection Act or the HB 1115I. This bill shall cover the manufacture, distribution, sale, possession of the quality kratom and contaminated or adulterated one. It shall set the age limits for kratom usage while also setting up fines and penalties. It shall also lay down the guidelines for testing kratom and ask vendors to follow strict labelling practises on kratom products.
Another bill however was also introduced in January 2020 that aims to achieve the exact opposite of the Kratom Consumer Protection Act and wants to ban it instead. This SB 765 wants to turn kratom into a Schedule I substance and put it in the same list as heroin, cocaine, meth and other dangerous opioids.
Missouri is right now at the cross road of this kratom discussion and the final bell is yet to toll. So, if you intend to buy kratom maybe today or tomorrow, we advise you to please check the local laws in the state of Missouri.

Why you shouldn’t buy Kratom locally
There is a risk of some bad actors who have entered the kratom business due to the law not being in place at present. They are able to sell adulterated and contaminated kratom that can cause poisoning to make a quick buck. Many council members from several Missouri counties too have pointed this out and thus grew the need to set up the Kratom Consumer Protection Act.
Though not all vendors of kratom are doing such bad dealings. There are quite a few good people too who can and are providing good quality kratom. But one needs to check their backgrounds and the quality of the product as per a third party checking schedule. While it surely is a lot quicker to simply swing by the local vendor and get your kratom but checking so many things is much easier to do if you access them online.
Where can you buy Kratom online?
Searching for kratom online allows you to research and understand properly the product you want before you purchase it. There is also a much larger selection of products available. And if you already are sure of the variety of kratom you want, online can provide much better rates in terms of discounts and such.
It is also easier to check against each vendor online if they are employing any third party checks on the products to ensure quality. And the choice becomes easy when you go to a vendor who has a nationwide presence like Coastline Kratom or others who have a good reputation, are well known and are trustworthy.
Most of the online players are also a safer alternative as they import their kratom from reliable sources or distributors about whom they present the full portfolio online to be checked at your own discretion.
The laws in Missouri are almost at their finalisation stage. However, the law can as it stands today take one of the two routes – to ban it completely or to regulate it and allow its usage within some standards. So if you at present want to taste the many varieties and mixtures of kratom, maybe this is the only time before the law gets finalised.
Once the law is set in motion, these varieties will either all be gone or will be greatly reduced to a couple of them. But at present the risks are also great from the consumer’s point of view and you should check the vendor before you buy thoroughly in terms of their commitment and quality of product.
